  7.     How can police in towns separated by hundreds of miles
  8. tell when a roaming serial murderer or rapist is at work? The
  9. FBI will soon provide a key with its new Combined DNA
  10. Identification System (CODIS). The computer program provides a
  11. universal registry of DNA traces found in the blood and semen
  12. samples the attackers often leave behind. All forensic labs in
  13. the U.S. will be asked to use the FBI's system, so that no
  14. matter where a person's DNA is tested, the record will be
  15. uniform. Using CODIS, authorities can tell if a faceless
  16. criminal has been detected elsewhere.
